Pre and post tan advice

This page will give you advice on:

  • Insight into what happens when you have a spray tan
  • Preparation for your tan
  • What to do once you've had your tan
  • Aftercare

What should I expect?

If you've never had a spray tan, then I'll give you a quick insight into what is involved.

1) I arrive at your home, complete a consultation form with you and provide aftercare instructions. I then unpack my spray tan cubicle and machinery.

2) Once you are ready, we apply "sticky feet" to your feet (these are paper like slippers which stop solution from sticking to the soles of the feet).  I then ask you to stand in my tanning cubicle and I use a spray gun to apply the tan evenly to the body, following a routine. This routine is done twice, and takes around ten minutes.

3) Once the tan is dry, you are then free to get dressed into lose fitting clothing.

After a minimum of eight hours you shower and are left with a natural healthy looking tan!

Preparation for your tan

In order to get the very best results for your tan, it is important that steps are taken prior to and after your tan has been applied.

  • It is important to note that using certain brands of shampoo, body wash, shower gel and moisturisers (please contact me for brand names) prior to your tan can create a barrier that stops the tan from being absorbed. This is to do with certain ingredients in products which can act as a barrier and prevent the tan from being absorbed; resulting in a patchy tan. Please therefore avoid these products before your tan.
  • Please don't have a shower just before your tan.
  • Please exfoliate thoroughly the day prior to your tan, this helps to remove dead skin and ensure that the tan is at it's best. Especially remember the elbows, knees, heels and any areas of hard skin.
  • You can exfoliate using a good salt scrub, or exfoliating mitts also provide good results; these can be purchased at your local supermarket or pharmacy.
  • Please shave/wax and moisturise any dry areas the day before your tan, this must be done a.
  • Remove contact lenses prior to your session.
  • Please remove jewellery, make-up, moisturiser, perfume and deodorant before I apply your tan.
  • Please consult me if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What to wear during and after your tan

Ideally wear old dark coloured underwear, alternatively a bikini or similar.

After your tan it is advisable to wear lose fitting clothing - if you wear tight fitting clothing then the tan may rub off and leave unwanted strap marks.

After you have had your tan

  • The tanning solution needs to develop for a minimum of eight hours, before showering.
  • Avoid using any certain products as these can bring the tan off very quickly. Again I will advise of these products when you book your tan.
  • After showering pat yourself rather than rub yourself dry with a towel (rather than rub).
  • Do not exercise or get wet during the developing time.
  • Please try not to touch your hands or face after you have had your tan. As a therapist I show you that your hands are free of tan, I do not spray the palms at any time.
  • When showering, do not exfoliate or rub your skin at all during the time the tan is on.
  • Moisturising is the key to keeping your tan. Try to use an alcohol free moisturiser (alcohol dries the skin).
  • Don't use exfoliating facial washes or toner on the face for at least 24 hours after treatment.
  • If you exercise, swim or bathe regularly, your tan will have a shorter lifespan.
  • Avoid using an oil based products as these will make the tan come off more quickly.
